When our founder Michael Smolyansky was still with us, he and our CEO Julie would often discuss the need for a kids product. They knew kids needed probiotics. They knew kids loved kefir. They just needed some kid-friendly flavors and packaging. In April of 2002, Julie had an epiphany that led to the creation of ProBugs – you can read the full story in her personal Instagram post.

ProBugs: probiotics made craveable, for kids.

Over the years, we’ve continually improved our ProBugs packaging to make sure it’s in a form that kids (and parents) will love. Our newest ProBugs version may have an updated look and more probiotic strains, but it’s still the same ProBugs you know and love. Each flavor is made with organic whole milk — providing the necessary calcium, vitamin D, and probiotics that growing kids need to stay healthy and strong. Packed with more strains of live probiotic cultures (12 strains vs. 10!), they’re still up to 99% lactose-free, gluten-free, and USDA certified organic.

Kefir: a healthy and kid-friendly snack option

When it comes to choosing the perfect snacks for children, it’s important to include wholesome options that provide a good source of calcium and protein for growing kids. Snack time is the perfect opportunity to sneak in extra nutrients with whole foods while avoiding artificial ingredients. Live bacteria, such as the beneficial kind like probiotics, can benefit the digestive system and support immunity. Kefir is fermented and high in protein—and new studies have shown that foods with a combination of these two characteristics helps promote good health.

Should my kids be taking probiotics?

While there are no official recommendations regarding the amount of probiotics children should be consuming, healthy kids of all ages can benefit from a diet that includes probiotics. Remember to consult with your pediatrician or dietitian first to discuss the best options for your children. Getting full nutrients from whole foods is usually the recommended route. Opting for foods that naturally contain probiotics such as kefir is an easy, convenient, and delicious way to support a smarter snack time.
