Healthy Skin Smoothie

Our Healthy Skin Smoothie includes ingredients to help hydrate and nourish your skin from the inside. According to this study done by dermatologists and biogerontologists, the best way to have healthy skin is to practice adequate prevention methods. Once damage to the skin is done, it can be hard to reverse it. Regular exercise, a diet high in antioxidants, adequate sleep, hydration, and the use of sunscreen will also help your skin be as healthy as possible.

Not only is the skin the largest organ in the body, it is an organ of protection, regulation, and sensation. The skin helps regulate body temperature and is our first defense against germs (not all bacteria is bad!) and the elements. The skin has an extensive network of nerve cells that detect and relay changes in the environment. Because it plays such an important role in our overall health and well-being, it’s crucial to keep our skin healthy and functioning appropriately.

So, send some love to your complexion with our Healthy Skin Smoothie – each sip will leave your skin luminous and replenished.

The Three Layers of our Skin

The skin consists of three layers, each performing vital functions for our body. The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, is responsible for protection, cell creation, and the production of melanin which is what gives your skin its color. Our nerve endings and blood vessels are found in the dermis, the middle layer of skin. The dermis is also responsible for hair growth and sweat and oil production. Last but not least is the hypodermis, where subcutaneous fat is stored. The hypodermis regulates our body temperature and is what attaches the dermis to the muscles and bones.

The Healthy Skin Smoothie: The Ingredients

Kefir

The probiotics from our kefir may “create a barrier [in the gut] to reduce inflammation, which can trigger certain skin conditions.” Our kefir also contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), a popular ingredient in skin care products.

Spinach

Studies have shown that some phytonutrients may act as photoprotectants that protect skin cells from UV damage. One such phytonutrient, Vitamin E, is found in spinach. Spinach also contains Vitamin A which helps foster the growth of skin cells.

Cucumber

Cucumber has been shown to help reduce inflammation “by inhibiting the production of prostaglandin, the inflammatory compound.” Cucumbers may protect the skin from sun damage because they contain flavonoids, tannins, and vitamin C. Furthermore, cucumbers provide excellent hydration for the body, which may help reduce wrinkles.

Mango

Some studies have shown that mangoes may actually protect against skin aging from sun exposure. Mangoes are rich in Vitamin A and beta-carotene, which may prevent skin aging. Our bodies actually convert beta-carotene—a carotenoid and antioxidant—into Vitamin A (retinol).

Pineapple

Like many other ingredients in this smoothie, pineapple also has Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Vitamin C promotes collagen synthesis which helps keep the skin taut and wrinkle-free.

Collagen

Collagen is a family of proteins that play an essential role in maintaining tissue strength in skin, hair, bone, tendon, and ligaments. It’s imperative for keeping your skin strong and healthy.

Not only are these ingredients great in your smoothies, they can also be used in topical applications. Check out our Kefir Face Masks, which pair perfectly with The Healthy Skin Smoothie, to create a perfect DIY spa day.
