Laura’s Blackened Salmon with Kefir Slaw from @CookatHomeMom is a heart-healthy meal that will be your new favorite on Taco night!
Originally served up in Baja California, the fish taco is a seaside staple that has evolved with contemporary flavors and techniques over the years. The classic fish taco consists of deep-fried fish, a mayonnaise-based sauce, salsa, and lime.
Using pan-seared salmon and slaw dressed with kefir, Laura (@CookatHomeMom) created a healthier version that’s just as tasty. The contrast of creamy avocado, tangy kefir, and acidic onions makes each bite fresh, satisfying, and heart healthy.

Servings: 8-10Ingredients
Blackened Salmon
- 1 lb. salmon fillets
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cumin
- ½ tsp oregano
- 1 tsp chipotle powder
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp pepper
- juice of 1 lime
Kefir Slaw
- ⅓ cup Plain Lowfat Kefir
- 2 cups shredded cabbage
- 1 green onion, sliced
- 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
- 2 tbsp lime zest
- salt & pepper to taste
To Assemble Tacos
- 8-10 small tortillas
- 2 avocados, sliced
- 1 cup pickled red onions
- 1 lime, sliced
Directions
- Blackened Salmon Seasoning: In a small bowl, mix together the seasonings. Pat the salmon dry and then coat with the seasoning mix.
- Cooking the Salmon: Heat a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium heat, then add in the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the fish to the pan, flesh side down, and cook for about 3-4 minutes. Flip the salmon and cook for another 5-6 minutes, gently pressing down, to desired doneness. (I like mine medium, not too well done!) Remove the salmon and drizzle with lime juice.
- Kefir Slaw: Place the cabbage in a medium bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk all remaining ingredients together and pour over the cabbage, stirring until combined.
