Cultured Dairy: The Nutrition Benefits You Need to Know
With increasing research linking the correlation between probiotics, gut health, and immunity, it’s no secret that the integrity of our gut is vital to our health. Although additional factors such as stress, antibiotic usage, and individual health conditions can contribute to the condition of our gut, a focus on healthy food choices is one of the easiest ways to support the microbiome.
Several studies have shown a strong association between the gut-brain-microbiota. Probiotics introduced to the gut have been found to support immunity, improve allergies, and improve digestion.
Studies have shown that reduced diversity of healthy gut bacteria during early years is associated with an increase in food allergies during school-age years. In addition, kefir made from whole milk helps absorb key nutrients such as Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Vitamin K is important because it helps your bones absorb calcium. It’s important to know that kefir contains a special trio: vitamin D, K, and calcium – all three crucial elements to support bone health.
Servings: 2Ingredients
- 2 cups Lifeway Organic Strawberry Whole Milk Kefir
- 2 cups frozen strawberries
- 1 large banana, sliced and frozen
- Large handful of fresh raspberries
- Optional: Lifeway Plain Lowfat Kefir
Directions
- In the pitcher of a high-powered blender, add the frozen banana, frozen strawberries, 1/3 cup of kefir, and a handful of raspberries. Blend on high until smooth, then pour 2/3 of the smoothie into two mason jars. Place in the freezer to prepare the next layer.
- For the next layer, do not rinse out the pitcher, but add another 2/3 cup of kefir to the leftover smoothie, plus ice as necessary for consistency. Blend on high until smooth. Remove mason jars from the freezer and pour 2/3 of the contents of the pitcher on top of the first smoothie layers.
- Return the mason jars one last time to the freezer and add the final 2/3 cup kefir into the pitcher. Blend with ice, as needed, until smooth.
- Remove the mason jars from the freezer and divide the contents of the pitcher between the two cups. Finish the smoothie with a final layer of plain kefir, frozen kefir, or whipped cream. Garnish with strawberries and sip in style!
