Fancy some crickets?

Cricket powder (or flour) is the latest rage in the health food industry. High in protein, it makes an excellent addition to your morning protein shakes or smoothies. Now you can stop by one of the Lifeway Kefir Shops  to get your cricket fix. According to a recent article in NPR, cricket powder contains about 12.9g of protein per 100g, and is high in “fat and the essential amino acids lysine and tryptophan, which are scarce in cereal proteins like soy.” And to top it off, insects are one of the most sustainable forms of protein out there!

We bet you won’t find this ingredient at your local smoothie bar! Perfectly safe for children, dare them to try this tasty smoothie at your next visit!

Blue Green Algae for even more protein

This new smoothie is a protein powerhouse. Blue green algae contains 50 to 70 percent protein and is high in in vitamins A, complex-B vitamins, vitamin E. It also contains all essential amino acids and “contains more beta-carotene than carrots”!

But what exactly is blue green algae? Usually blue green algae is a mixture of spirulina and Aphanizomenon flos aquae or AFA. According to LiveStrong, “Spiriluna is often cultured and grown in labs, while AFA can be found naturally, most notably in Oregon’s Upper Klamath Lake.”

Try this protein packed ingredient at your next Lifeway Kefir Shop visit — before it retreats back into the sea. Or Lake Michigan.
