Cultured Dairy: The Nutrition Benefits You Need to Know
With increasing research linking the correlation between probiotics, gut health, and immunity, it’s no secret that the integrity of our gut is vital to our health. Although additional factors such as stress, antibiotic usage, and individual health conditions can contribute to the condition of our gut, a focus on healthy food choices is one of the easiest ways to support the microbiome.
Several studies have shown a strong association between the gut-brain-microbiota. Probiotics introduced to the gut have been found to support immunity, improve allergies, and improve digestion.
Studies have shown that reduced diversity of healthy gut bacteria during early years is associated with an increase in food allergies during school-age years. In addition, kefir made from whole milk helps absorb key nutrients such as Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Vitamin K is important because it helps your bones absorb calcium. It’s important to know that kefir contains a special trio: vitamin D, K, and calcium – all three crucial elements to support bone health. Lifeway Farmer Cheese is also a great source of all these nutrients, just in a different format for all the cheese lovers out there.
Prep Time: 20 mins Servings: 4Ingredients
- 1 pound of ground lean turkey (or grass-fed beef)
- 1/2 tsp. each garlic powder, onion powder, ground pepper and/or chili powder
- 2 sweet potatoes
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 avocado, peeled and pitted (cut into 4 quarters, then slice them in pieces)
- 1 cup Farmer Cheese
- Optional dressing (shown in photo): 1 tsp. ranch seasoning and juice of a lemon mixed with 1/2 cup Lowfat Plain Kefir
- Optional: additional salt and pepper for seasoning, hot sauce, salsa, or any other sauce you want on top
Directions
- Put the ground turkey (or grass-fed beef) in a skillet sprayed with nonstick spray (or coated lightly in coconut oil or avocado oil) and add garlic powder, onion powder, and/or chili powder or black pepper. Toss to coat, and cook over medium-high heat until browned.
- Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into cubes, sprinkle with 1 tsp. sea salt and 1 tsp. black pepper, and air-fry for 12-14 minutes (or cook in the oven at 425 degrees on a baking sheet on the top rack until brown and crispy).
- Once the turkey and sweet potatoes are cooked completely, portion everything into 4 bowls (this is great to meal prep!) and add the slices of avocado to each bowl.
- Place Lifeway Farmer Cheese in each bowl on top or to the side, and add the optional dressing we used. To make this, stir together 1 tsp. ranch seasoning, juice of a lemon, and 1/2 cup plain Lowfat Lifeawy Kefir, then drizzle over the top and add any extra seasonings you like. Enjoy!
- For some extra flavor and toppings, feel free to add some hot sauce or salsa on top—or whatever else you enjoy!
