Lifeway Kefir: Protein and Probiotics Without the Compromise
Most high protein treats ask you to compromise on quality ingredients. Chalky textures, artificial sweeteners, and mysterious gums are often treated as the necessary price of hitting your macros. But desserts with Lifeway play a different game. Our kefir’s natural protein blends effortlessly into desserts like this soft serve frozen kefir, because the protein is naturally occurring and isn’t derived from synthetic or highly processed sources. No gums, emulsifiers, or artificial ingredients are welcome here! Even better, the protein in our kefir is easy for your body to digest and absorb, leaving post-dessert stomach woes off the table.
Purple Sweet Potato Benefits:
Purple sweet potatoes have a velvety, creamy texture to them with an alluring sweetness that makes them a delight to use in desserts like this, especially when paired with a few other wholesome ingredients. These low-glycemic tubers are also packed with anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant that gives them their gorgeous color and that combats inflammation. Additionally, they’re packed with prebiotic fiber, vitamins A, C, and B6, along with magnesium and potassium.

Combining prebiotic foods with probiotic foods is an excellent way to support gut health, while combining fiber-rich foods with protein supports satiety and blood sugar levels. That’s what makes this Purple Sweet Potato Soft Serve Frozen Kefir the perfect candidate for a healthy treat. With a light finish of crunchy walnuts, this dessert is ready to enjoy. Trust us, it’s a keeper!

The Benefits of Cultured Dairy for Better Health:
Research continues to show the importance of eating healthy foods, including cultured dairy such as kefir, for better gut health, a strong immune system, and to support the microbiome. Fermented foods like kefir hold important value in this line of research due to the link between the gut-brain axis and overall health.
Specifically, kefir has been shown to help diversify the microbiome, support the digestive system, reduce inflammation, support healthier blood sugar levels, and improve satiety since the bioavailable protein it contains triggers the release of GLP-1. Lifeway Kefir also contains a variety of nutrients that are vital for healthy bones and overall health, including vitamins D3, K, and B12 along with calcium and potassium. Along with our kefir, we also offer our creamy, cultured Lifeway Farmer Cheese, a high protein cheese made with live and active cultures to support a healthy microbiome that’s easy to spread and contains no added salt or sugar.
Prep Time: Varies - See Directions Servings: 2Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup Lowfat Vanilla Kefir
- *or try our whole milk vanilla kefir for a richer texture and flavor
- 1/2 a baked purple sweet potato, cooled (skin removed)
- 1 very ripe fresh banana (heavily spotted)
- 3 tsp. pure maple syrup
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp. ginger
- pinch of kosher salt
- Garnish: 2 tbsp. chopped walnuts
Directions
Make It With a Ninja Creami:
- To a blender, add Lifeway Lowfat Vanilla Kefir, purple sweet potato, banana, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and kosher salt; blend on high until smooth and creamy. Transfer the mixture to a Ninja® CREAMi® container, seal with a lid, and freeze overnight.
- After an overnight freeze (or 8 hours), remove the lid and process the base by selecting soft serve, then ice cream. If needed, re-spin if the texture seems crumbly. If your machine does not have a soft serve function, simply process it as ice cream like you normally would.
- If your machine has a soft serve function, secure the soft serve lid and nozzle, and attach to the swirl portion of the machine. Pull the leaver and dispense the soft serve onto two cones (or into two bowls).
- Garnish each cone with chopped walnuts, then enjoy!
Make It Without a Ninja Creami:
- To a blender, add Lifeway Lowfat Vanilla Kefir, purple sweet potato, banana, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and kosher salt; blend on high until smooth and creamy.
- Pour the mixture into a sealable glass or silicone container that's shallow in length. Put the lid on and freeze for 4 hours. Scrape down the sides, then put the lid back on, and freeze again until completely frozen.
- Once frozen, scoop out the frozen kefir onto two cones (or into two bowls), add the walnuts, and enjoy!
- If you have an electric ice cream maker, you can also make this recipe; just blend the ingredients, pour into the machine, and process until frozen. Scoop and serve in cones or bowls, then garnish with the walnuts. Enjoy!
