With the frigid temperatures and fleeting sunshine, it’s easy to succumb to the winter blues. While there’s no way to change the weather, there are some natural remedies to relieve some of the symptoms of Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Check out our favorites below.
Vitamin D
Daily sun exposure is usually enough to get us the vitamin D we need, but that sunshine is scarce in the wintertime. Supplement with vitamin D-rich foods, such as fatty fish, mushrooms, and fortified milk or kefir. You can also talk to your doctor or medical professional about taking a vitamin D supplement.
Exercise
According to Mayo Clinic, exercise and physical activity can relieve stress and anxiety. Exercise also increases the effects endorphins have on your body, which can improve immunity, pain tolerance, and mood.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fresh produce is harder to find in the winter, and while it’s easy to let your diet slip, it’s important to maintain a well-balanced diet. Eat plenty of leafy greens and colorful veggies, which will boost energy levels and keep your hanger away.
Socialize
Leaving the house is the last thing we want to do when the temperatures dip, but keeping in touch with friends keeps us active and happy. Grab dinner, take an exercise class, or go ice skating – we promise it’s worth the effort.
Probiotics
New studies (like this one and this one) suggest that multi-strain probiotics may help improve mood and combat the effects of depression. Get your daily dose with a tall glass of Lifeway Kefir, which is packed with 12 strains of live and active cultures.
