The Benefits of Cultured Dairy for Better Health:
Research continues to show the importance of eating healthy foods, including cultured dairy such as kefir, for better gut health, a strong immune system, and to support the microbiome. Fermented foods like kefir hold important value in this line of research due to the link between the gut-brain axis and overall health. Specifically, kefir has been shown to help diversify the microbiome, improve digestion, reduce inflammation, support healthier blood sugar levels, and improve satiety since the bioavailable protein it contains triggers the release of GLP-1.
Lifeway Kefir also contains a variety of nutrients that are vital for healthy bones and overall health: vitamin D3, K, calcium, and vitamin B12. Along with our kefir, we also offer our artisan-made Farmer Cheese, a creamy high-protein cheese made with live and active cultures to support a healthy microbiome that’s easy to spread and contains no added salt for optimal heart-health benefits.
Prep Time: 10-15 mins Servings: 1Ingredients
Blueberry Portion:
- 1/2 cup Lowfat Blueberry Kefir
- 1/2 a banana, sliced and frozen
- 1/2 cup frozen wild blueberries
- optional: 1/2-3/4 tsp. blue spirulina powder (for a deeper blue color)
Matcha Portion:
- 1/2 cup Lowfat Plain Kefir
- *or you can use additional Lowfat Blueberry Kefir if preferred
- 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1/2 a frozen banana, sliced and frozen
- 1 1/4 tsp. culinary grade matcha green tea powder
- optional: 1 tsp. honey or maple syrup (if you want it sweeter)
Garnishes:
- sliced kiwis
- fresh blueberries
- other ideas: low sugar granola, coconut flakes, hemp seeds, or sliced almonds
Directions
- Tip: Make the Matcha Portion first to avoid color transfer in the blender. Add Lifeway Lowfat Plain Lifeway Kefir (or Lowfat Blueberry kefir), the frozen mango, frozen banana, matcha powder, and honey or maple if using to a blender, then blend. If your machine has a tamper, use it; if not, you may need to add a little extra kefir or scrape down the sides to get the blades moving. Keep in mind, the mixture should be very thick.
- Scoop the matcha layer from the blender into a bowl, then set aside.
- Make the Blueberry Portion: Add Lifeway Lowfat Blueberry Kefir, 1/2 a frozen banana, wild blueberries, and spirulina if using to the blender, then blend and repeat the same process as the matcha layer before adding this portion on the other side of the bowl. Slightly swirl the colors together just enough to mix them together a little.
- Garnish with freshly sliced kiwi, fresh blueberries, and any other topping you like (low sugar granola, coconut flakes, hemp seeds, sliced almonds). Enjoy right away for the best texture.
