Have a Healthy Breakfast for National School Breakfast Week!

It’s National School Breakfast Week, a campaign to increase student participation in school breakfast programs! Here at Lifeway, we can’t think of a better way to start the day than with a healthy and hearty breakfast. We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – and it truly is. Eating breakfast is linked to increased energy, improved concentration, a healthier weight, and better grades. Unfortunately, 8-12% of school age students skip breakfast, increasing to as much as 30% once they reach adolescence.

We’re working to increase awareness about children’s nutrition everyday. Here are some organizations that Lifeway has worked with in the past that you can support:

Common Threads

Common Threads creates and delivers a cooking and nutrition curriculum for kids in underserved schools and communities. Their goal is to develop life-long healthy eating habits amongst students. Lifeway has supported them in the past with sponsorships and teaching lessons at their summer camp.

FoodCorps

Connecting kids to healthy food in school, FoodCorps combines hands-on learning with healthy school meals so students can lead healthier lives and reach their full potential. Lifeway is a member of the FoodCorps Corporate Council and even sponsored a school service member in 2016.

Pilot Light Chefs

A non-for-profit headed by some of the biggest players in the Chicago restaurant world, Pilot Light helps kids make healthier choices by integrating food education into the school curriculum. We’ve helped in the past by participating in a school lunch takeover. Watch Pilot Light Chef Sandra Holl of Floriole prepare a delicious kefir panna cotta below.
