Here at Lifeway, we care about our carbon footprint just as much as we care about creating delicious probiotic products for you and your family. Which is why we switched our Organic kefir bottles to a more environmentally friendly packaging called green polyethylene, a material that is made of sugarcane, a renewable resource. This will help us further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and still provide bottles that are safe, BPA-free, and recyclable!
Green polyethylene is a thermoplastic resin, which means our organic kefir bottles will now use plant-based materials rather than fossil-based. By choosing a greener alternative in packaging and fighting for environmental sustainability, we’re fulfilling a crucial part of our mission and our commitment to using only all-natural, hormone and GMO-free ingredients, global philanthropy, responsible sourcing, and renewable energy initiatives.
We lightly sweeten all of our flavored kefir (including organic and non-organic) products with 1g of sugar per ounce. This means our drinkable kefir products generally have less added sugar than competitors. Currently, when reading our flavored kefir labels, one might assume we add 20 grams of sugar, when in fact most of the sugar actually comes from milk. Milk has 12 grams of naturally occurring sugar. We only add 8 grams of cane sugar, or around 2 teaspoons, per 8oz serving.
If you’re looking for a no added sugar option, all of our our plain varieties (low fat and whole milk) are unsweetened! Coming soon we will be using an updated Nutrition Facts Panel aka “The Nutrition Facts.” The new label will feature a larger type for Calories, a new line for added sugar, and the addition of Vitamin D and Potassium. You can learn more about the changes here.
Natural Flavors vs Artificial
Many of our flavored products use natural flavors. Natural flavors, as the name indicates, are derived from real, natural sources. All of the flavors that we use are made from fruit juices, fruit essences, and essential oils. The fruit flavoring is derived from the fruit itself. For example, “natural blueberry flavor” is made from blueberries. The sources of natural flavors exist in nature and are something that can be eaten. We never use artificial flavorings in our products. Read more about the differences here.
Lifeway’s drinkable kefir products have 12 unique probiotic strains. Essentially, probiotics are “good” bacteria. They are live microorganisms similar to the ones already living in your gut and may offer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Probiotics can help balance the microbiome by replenishing the good bacteria, which may lead to improved digestion and better immunity. You can learn more about probiotics and the many ways they’ve been shown to help overall wellbeing here.
